Bulbul Diatomite products are like ceramics and are fragile, handle with care. Product may appear powdery out of the box due to the natural composition of the materials. Simply wipe it clean with a damp cloth before using it. Product is supposed to be kept dry, do not wash before use.
The Diatomite products absorption rate and performance will vary based on how heavy use it undergoes. Here are some care tips to maintain peak performance.
If you have previously used it to hold soap. Firstly, place the product into boiling water to displace any residual soap oils and dirt that may be trapped inside. This step is important as the soap can leave behind thin oil layers that may interfere with water absorption. Furthermore, you can use 1 tablespoon of Sodium Percarbonate (Not Baking soda) to help displace oils and dirt more effectively. After completing this step, you can proceed with the microwave/oven drying process.
To speed up the drying process, you can place product inside the microwave, oven or simply dry under direct sun. The recomended microwave/oven timings for each product are as follows:
Recommended time for Microwave based on 800-1000 watt power
Double Sided Tray: 2m 30sec
Small Drying Holder: 1m
Medium Drying Holder: 2m 30sec
Large Drying holder: 7m
Soap Dish : 2m
Coaster: 1m 30sec

Recommended time for oven for all products is 5 minutes under 200°C temperature.

How to use?
Place Bulbul’s Diatomite Homeware around bathrooms, toilets and kitchens to instantly absorb moisture. The product may appear powdery out of the box due to the natural composition of the materials. The absorption rate and performance of Modular Bath Mat may vary based on usage intensity. Here are some care tips to maintain peak performance. You may dry under the sun once every 1 to 4 weeks or when needed. For a deep clean, you may boil the ceramic blocks in boiling water for 15 to 30 minutes. Additionally, you may add 1 tablespoon of Sodium Percarbonate (Not Baking soda). Leave products under direct sun or microwave until completely dry. The products are made up of fine pores, make sure it is sufficiently dry before use.
Stains or Algae
In case of stubborn algae or stains, gently scrub with a sponge or fine-grit sandpaper to remove them. If it is a liquid stain that is trapped deep within the material. Use sodium percarbonate and boil it for 15 to 30 minutes. Make sure it is completely dry before use.
Microwave
To speed up the drying process, you can place the ceramic blocks inside the microwave in 1000 watt power. You may microwave again if it is still wet. (Please note that oven/microwaving with trapped soap oil, dirt, and/or any foreign materials may leave burn marks on the product.

Oven
You can oven dry the diatomite products under 180°C heat for 5 minutes. If product is still wet or holding water within, you may place it inside the oven for another 5 mins. Do make sure the oven’s fan is turned on for an even spread of heat. Heating Diatomite only on one side may cause it to warp.
What to do when it breaks?

What NOT to do with Bulbul Diatomite Product
📌 Don’t wash before use - Keep dry; washing before use may cause mould if left in a wet environment. Follow care instructions for stain removal.
📌 Do not use force to wipe - The surface may have a powdery texture due to its natural composition. Gently wipe with a damp cloth to avoid abrasions.
📌 Do not wash with detergent - Fine pores can trap soap, reducing performance. To restore, boil with sodium percarbonate or until the water runs clear.
📌 Do not microwave the bath mat plastic plate from bath mat - Please remove the blocks for deep cleansing, and do not place the plastic parts in the microwave or oven.
📌 Do not carry the bath mat with one hand. Please handle with care. - Always use both hands to prevent loosening joints or breakage.

Can I wash it with detergent?
No. Detergent clogs the pores and reduces absorption. Clean it only when it needs it, and always let it dry fully afterwards.
Do I need to wash it before first use?
No, please don't. Just wipe it gently with a damp cloth if it looks powdery.
Why is it more expensive than other diatomite?
Cheaper versions are usually bulked out with pulp or cement filler. Ours is high density, pressed under high pressure and kiln fired, so it holds up to boiling, microwaving and years of use without deforming.
It stopped absorbing. What do I do?
Start by wiping it gently with a damp cloth to lift any surface oils and dirt.
If it's saturated, it just needs drying out. Leave it in direct sunlight for a few hours and it should come back. No microwave needed.
You can microwave it to speed things up, but only once you're sure there's no trapped oil or dirt in the pores. Soap oil will burn and leave marks.

How does diatomite actually work?
It's a natural mineral made from fossilised algae, full of microscopic pores. Those pores pull surface water in instantly, so whatever sits on top dries faster. No chemicals, no coating, just the material doing its thing.
Can I place the diatomite tray beside my sink if water splashes onto the countertop?
Yes, as long as it gets a chance to dry between splashes. Diatomite handles water well, but mould can start if it stays wet all the time.
Easy way to check: pick it up. It should feel light, dry and chalky. If it feels cold and heavy, it isn't drying out properly. Move it a little out of the splash zone, or away from where water tends to pool.
If you spot mould already, sand the patch gently with fine grit sandpaper, or boil it with sodium percarbonate. Let it dry fully before you use it again.
How do I know it's completely dry?
Pick it up. Dry diatomite feels light and chalky. If it feels cold to the touch and a little heavier than usual, there's still moisture inside and it needs more time.
How do I deep-clean it?
Boil it for 15 to 30 minutes with 1 tbsp of sodium percarbonate (not baking soda). Rinse it, then dry it completely: sun dry, air dry, or microwave.
Microwave times at 800 to 1000W: soap dish 2 minutes, coaster 1 minute 30, tray 2 minutes 30. Or oven at 180 to 200°C for 5 minutes with the fan on.
Does it absorb the soap itself?
No. It wicks away the watery film of soap underneath the bar, not the bar itself.
Can I use it under a sponge or something greasy?
Yes. It draws out moisture and some of the soap oils along with it. Just deep-clean it every so often so it keeps absorbing properly.
How do i get rid of stains and odours?
Pigmented liquids can stain it, since diatomite absorbs whatever sits on top. A deep clean lifts most marks. Keep it dry between uses and deep-clean now and then, and odours won't build up.
will soap Slip on flat dish?
Diatomite dries fast, so a drier bar is less likely to slide. It isn’t anti-slip by design—blot after use or consider our ridged option.
