How to Maintain Your Bulbul Diatomite Homeware for Optimal Performance

Bulbul's diatomite homeware is crafted using a unique process and made with 100% mineral, setting it apart from other diatomite products on the market.

To ensure they continue to perform at their best, proper care is essential. Here's a guide on how to maintain your diatomite homeware so it stays effective and beautiful for years to come.

These maintenance tips are specifically designed to keep Bulbul's diatomite homeware performing at its best, ensuring its durability and effectiveness.

1. Initial Use & General Maintenance

As Bulbul's diatomite homeware is not coated or treated with glaze, you might notice some dust or residue on the surface initially. To prepare your diatomite for use, avoid vigorous cleaning; gently wipe it with a damp cloth before the first use.

For general maintenance, wipe with a damp cloth when needed.

🧽 Caution Regarding Cleaning After Opening the Package If you rinse the diatomite with water immediately after unpacking, it may retain moisture, which could lead to mold growth. It is advisable to use the product immediately after unpacking or to clean it lightly with a damp cloth if needed.

2. Regular Sun Drying

The absorption rate of diatomite may vary depending on how frequently it's used. To maintain peak performance, it's recommended to dry your diatomite products under the sun once every 1 to 4 weeks, or as needed.

Unlike other diatomite products, Bulbul's diatomite is uniquely designed to withstand direct sunlight without causing any warping or shape changes. Sun drying not only restores the material's natural absorption capacity but also ensures it remains free from moisture that could lead to mildew.

Depending on your household environment, it might be necessary to dry the product more frequently. The drying time can vary depending on the intensity and duration of sunlight exposure, ranging from half a day to two days. This regular sun exposure keeps the diatomite in optimal condition.

3. Cleaning for Contamination or Absorbed Contaminants

If your diatomite product becomes contaminated or if you wish to clean absorbed contaminants, boil it in water with 1 teaspoon of Sodium Percarbonate (for 15 to 20 minutes. This natural cleaning method is effective without compromising the integrity of the diatomite. After boiling, ensure the product is thoroughly dried under sunlight before reuse.

4. Deep Cleaning and Stubborn Stains

For more stubborn stains or deep-set contaminants:

  • Increase the boiling time and the amount of Sodium Percarbonate if the contamination persists after initial cleaning.
  • If the diatomite turns white or shows residue from the cleaning agent, boil it again in clean water for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat as necessary until the residue is gone.

5. Microwave Drying

To speed up the drying process, you can place your diatomite product in the microwave.

However, ⚠️caution is required: microwaving diatomite that contains trapped soap, oil, dirt, or other foreign materials may result in burn marks on the ceramic block.

Here are the recommended microwave times for various diatomite products based on an 800-1000 watt microwave:

  • Double-Sided Tray: 2m 30sec
  • Small Drying Holder: 1m
  • Medium Drying Holder: 2m 30sec
  • Large Drying Holder: 7m
  • Soap Dish: 2m
  • Coaster: 1m 30sec

After microwaving, the diatomite will be hot, so handle it with care.

6. Oven Drying

Alternatively, you can dry your diatomite products in an oven.

Set the oven to 180°C and place the product inside for 5 minutes. If the product is still wet or holds water, you can leave it in the oven for another 5 minutes.

Make sure the oven’s fan is on to ensure even heat distribution (NOT grilling mode). Avoid heating the diatomite on one side only, as this may cause warping.

7. Things to Avoid with Diatomite Products

To ensure the longevity and optimal functionality of your diatomite products, please avoid the following:

  • Chemical Soaps: Diatomite's highly porous nature means it can absorb and trap liquid chemicals from soaps, reducing its effectiveness and potentially altering its properties.
  • Dishwashers: The aggressive detergents used in dishwashers can damage the delicate structure of diatomite.

Adhering to these guidelines will help maintain the natural qualities and durability of your diatomite items.

8. Repurposing Broken Pieces

If your diatomite product ever breaks, the pieces still retain their absorbent properties. Repurpose them as dehumidifiers in spaces like wardrobes or shoe cabinets, giving them a new life while continuing to provide benefits.

By following these comprehensive care tips, your Bulbul diatomite homeware will not only perform effectively but will also contribute to a sustainable and elegant home environment.

9. Safety and Durability

Our diatomite products are safe and designed to reduce fungi and suppress bacterial growth. They can withstand significant weight and pressure, making them suitable for various environments, including the kitchen. However, continuous exposure to a wet environment like a bathroom without proper drying can lead to mold and contamination.

By following these care tips, your Bulbul diatomite homeware will remain functional and aesthetically pleasing, contributing to a sustainable and convenient lifestyle.
